Folger finishes home grand prix in second position

Dynavolt Intact-GP pilot Jonas Folger finished an impressive race at the Sachsenring and only missed the first place by a whisker. Sandro Cortese was on course for place 4 but crashed twice within the last five laps. He managed to finish the race in place 15.

The race day of the German Grand Prix was marked by extremely tricky weather conditions. Strong and continuous rain made the 29 laps on the Sachsenring a very tense affair.

With a superb start Jonas Folger went straight from row 5 to place 4 and was fighting for the podium from the beginning. In lap 8 the 22 year-old even managed to take the lead, but towards the middle of the race the leading group pushed really hard and took a high risk under these difficult weather conditions. Jonas slowed down a little and observed the events from the back of the group. After Franco Morbidelli crashed in place 1, Jonas started to catch up and came closer to the leading riders Johann Zarco and Alex Rins with every lap. When Rins also crashed, Jonas could picture the win in front of his eyes and pushed even harder. In the last turn he overtook Zarco in front of an enthusiastic crowd of spectators, but the Frenchman was able to take the lead again and crossed the finish line just before Jonas.

With the second place and his third podium of the year the 22 year-old took 20 points home and improved to a sixth position in the World Championship standing.

Sandro Cortese had fought back to the Top 5 after initially falling back to position 14.  Five laps before the end of the race he slipped of the track, but managed to get back to 10th position only to crash again. As 12 riders had already crashed out by that time, he saw the chance to finish with valuable points. So he got back on his Kalex and finished the race in position 15. Considering that he could have finished in 4th place in front of the home crowd following the crash of Rins, he was understandably disappointed with that result.

After the summer break the next stop will be at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, Austria from the 12th to the 14th August. The Moto2 team will already be testing this new circuit in this years’ calendar from 26th to 27th July.
